* NEW: Free Green Waste Disposal
           (Saturday 7th - Sunday 15th November 2009)

Council is providing residents with free disposal of domestic
garden vegetation (tree clippings, palm fronds, grass cuttings,
etc.) in preparation for the upcoming cyclone season.

  • Portsmith Transfer Station (open 7 days 8:30am - 5:15pm)
  • Smithfield Transfer Station (open Mon - Sat 7:00am - 5:15pm; Sun 9:00am - 5:15pm)
  • Gordonvale Transfer Station (open 7 days 8:30am -5:15pm)
  • Killaloe Transfer Station (open Mon - Sat 8:00am - 5:30pm; Sun 9:00am - 5:30pm)
  • Newell Beach Transfer Station (open Mon & Fri 7:00am - 12:00pm; Wed 12:00pm - 6:00pm; Sat 7:00am - 6:00pm)

Domestic only – cars, utes/trailers, light trucks (max 4 tonne GVM).

Garden maintenance contractors who wish to dispose of domestic green waste on behalf of residents must complete the necessary forms available from Council’s Customer Service, participating Transfer Stations, or downloading the form below.

No other dates/times and locations will be offering free green waste disposal

  • For enquiries regarding Electric Ant or Crazy Ant quarantine, please contact the Department of Primary Industries and Fisheries on 13 25 23.

Normal rates apply for disposal of any other waste during this period and Council staff will not be available to assist with vehicle unloading

* NEW: Waste in Focus - National Recycling Week initiatives
            (Monday 9 - Sunday 15 November 2009)

National Recycling Week aims to promote re-use and recycling initiatives throughout business and the community.

To celebrate National Recycling Week, Council is hosting a public open day at the Materials Recovery Facility.

WHEN 9.00am-1.00pm, Sunday 15 November
WHERE Waste Street, Portsmith (off Redden Street), Cairns

The open day will give residents an opportunity to delve behind the scenes of the recycling process.

Guided tours, displays and information will provide visitors with an insider’s view of what happens to the recycled material once it leaves the kerbside.

Giveaways and a sausage sizzle will make this an unusual
but fun activity for the whole family

2009-10 Recycling & Waste Collection dates

Recycling collections will continue every 2 weeks. 
Remember to put paper, plastics, aluminum & steel and glass into your yellow-lid recycling bins.
